Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Shuanmazhuang Gully, about 5 km north of Shetai Town, Urad Front Banner, Inner Mongolia. It was named by Jin Xiangfu in 1981.


Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone and Claystone. Terrigenous fine-grained clastic rocks of the littoral-lagoon facies. At Shuanmazhuanggou, the Bottom part is composed of gray-green or purple-red sandstone-conglomerate (the pebbles being quartz and limestone). Middle and Upper parts are interbeds of irregular thicknesses of gray-green sandy or carbonaceous shale with gray-white quartz sandstone; the upper horizon has intercalations of thin coal and coal streaks, locally with cross-bedded sandstone. Thickness 164 m.

Fossils

Contains abundant fossil plants belonging to the Euro-American flora: the Neuropteris gigantea-Linopteris brongniartii assemblage, including N. kaipingiana, N. cf. pseudogigantea, N. cf. otozamioides, Lepidodendron galeatum, etc.
